Ancient Kauri is the oldest Swamp Kauri found in New Zealand and is the oldest workable wood in the world.
New Zealand native Kauri trees (Agathis australis) that fell thousands of years ago are known simply as Ancient Kauri. The trees have been buried and preserved underground in swamps for more than 45,000 years.
'It is very grand, very rare, very exotic and very very special.'

The crew extracting huge 45000 year old Swamp Kauri logs
Swamps preserved Ancient Kauri wood over the millennia.
Buried just below the surface of the ground and preserved in the water of peat swamps, the Ancient Kauri wood has neither petrified nor turned to coal. This underground resting place, sealed from the air, became a perfectly balanced cocoon that preserved the giant trees.
How did the ancient forests become buried?
We have a theory.
New Zealand Swamp Kauri varies in age — the oldest is found in the most northern region of New Zealand, nearby our company.
Swamp Kauri is only found in the top half of the North Island of New Zealand. Most of these forests have been buried for up to 3,000 years.
Research has revealed the further north swamp kauri is found, the significantly older it tends to be. Hence we changed the name from Swamp Kauri to Ancient Kauri to better reflect its true age. Our Ancient Kauri is more than 45,000 years old.
Numerous independent radio carbon dating by world experts confirm that at more than 45,000 years old, the buried Ancient Kauri recovered in the far north of New Zealand by Ancient Kauri Kingdom, is amongst the oldest of all Ancient Kauri found and certainly the oldest workable wood in the world… by a long, long way.
No Industry regulation on labeling young 'swamp Kauri' as Ancient Kauri
No Industry regulations for labeling exist, and it has become practice for most kauri manufacturers to use the label Ancient Kauri for even their young Swamp Kauri. Unlike other manufacturers we gaurantee our Ancient Kauri wood to be more than 45,000 years old.
Ancient Kauri is very very old. It is older than the migration of Neanderthal man, cave paintings and last ice age.
45,000 year old Ancient Kauri pre-dates the migration of Neanderthal man into North America, the hunt for mammoths and cave paintings in Europe. The Kauri forest was already buried some 25,000 years before the on-set of the last Ice Age giving scientists an important insight into Earths climatic past.
Cutting a log with a 11m girth requires some innovation...
Ancient Kauri logs are magnificently big.
Some of the Ancient Kauri logs are huge. Ancient Kauri Kingdom has extracted the largest log ever found - a whopping 23 metres (75') long, 11.3m (37') girth, weighing approximately 140 tonnes.
The gigantic log was skillfully turned into the amazing Giant Ancient Kauri Staircase that thousands of visitors climb each year as they browse our showroom.
