Logs are identified for special products
We target specific parts of the log relative to the different products we make. For example root stumps are used to make coffee tables and couches, the trunk sections for dining table tops and crafts, and the outside of the tree for natural edge bowls and boards etc. [View our Product Gallery]
Kauri craftsmen skills are utilised
We have trained our craftsmen how to process and work the ancient wood. |
Memorable rich grain and colour of Ancient Kauri
Ancient Kauri has a beautiful and distinctive grain. When polished, the wood is a deep golden colour with hues, textures and sheens that change under differing shades of light. Ancient Kauri is one of the few woods of the world that illuminates light from within - i.e. shimmers.
Oldest and most difficult timber to work with
Ancient Kauri is also described as one of the most difficult woods to work with... |
Kauri is naturally a soft wood, a member of the conifer family.
Ancient Kauri is even softer requiring more attention when working it. The main characteristics are a tight grain but no wood sap (long since dissolved in the water).
Properly dryed Ancient Kauri leads to a surprisingly light weight product for its size
Once dried correctly the wood is surprising light weight. A sign of a quality Ancient Kauri product is how light it is relative to it size. For example a turned salad bowl that feels heavy probably hasn’t been dried correctly and is most likely to split or warp as it continues to dry naturally. Products should only be made from Ancient Kauri after it has been dried correctly. Ancient Kauri Kingdom guarantee all the Ancient Kauri products we make (i.e. age, quality, authenticity and workmanship)
